According to data released by research firm Gartner, Huawei has overtaken Apple to become the second largest smartphone company in the world. In 2018 alone, the company has sold more than 100 million smartphones.
Gartner said in a statement that Huawei surpassed Apple to secure the number 2 spot in the second quarter of 2018. This probably has a lot to do with the success of its Honor sub-brand.
Talking about this achievement of Huawei’s, Anshul Gupta, the research director at Gartner, said:
Huawei’s smartphone sales grew 38.6 percent in the second quarter of 2018. Huawei continues to bring innovative features into its smartphones and expand its smartphone portfolio to cover larger consumer segments.
Its investment into channels, brand building and positioning of the Honor devices helped drive sales. Huawei is shipping its Honor smartphones into 70 markets worldwide and is emerging as Huawei’s key growth driver.
Another Chinese smartphone brand that is enjoying rapid success is Xiaomi, with the company now being the fourth largest smartphone company in the world. This is especially noticed in China where the company recently overtook Apple.
However, globally, Samsung still maintains its number 1 spot as the top smartphone manufacturer in the world. According to Gartner though, even this Korean giant saw a 12.7 percent decline in its all-round smartphone numbers in the second quarter of 2018.
The main challenge that Samsung faces from these Chinese brands is the price. The Chinese counterparts produce devices which come with amazing features at lower prices. This is probably why more people are going for them. However, even with slowing global smartphone demand, Samsung expects to revive growth with the Galaxy Note 9. It appears that the Galaxy Note 9 is not enjoying as much initial success as the Galaxy Note 8 though.
