Nokia 9 Launch Tipped To Be Moved To MWC 2019

The Nokia 9 has been anticipated by many for a long time to be HMD Global’s 2018 flagship release. The rumor that it will come with a penta-camera setup made it even more appealing. Over time, the expected launch has been delayed, with recent news tipping an October launch. However, it appears that we may not be getting the Nokia 9 this year after all.

Reports from a tipster have it that HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer, Juho Sarvikas, thinks that the Nokia 9 is not ready yet, and has therefore canceled the launch for this year. Apparently, the flagship may now be launched at the MWC next year.

According to the tipster, Nokia aNew, Sarvikas is categorically against the announcement of the Nokia 9 this year. The tipster made this known in a series of tweets, with claims that Sarvikas is aiming for a February 2019 release at the MWC instead. Last year, Sarvikas decided not to release the Nokia 8 Sirocco in September but instead chose to postpone it to MWC 2018. The tipster said that that was probably why the device “faded against the competition” considering the number of other Snapdragon 845-powered phones in the market.

One of the posts stated that:

Juho Sarvikas [is] afraid to take risks and just afraid to lose his position, clearly indifferent to the future of the brand and the company… Postponing the announcement is [the] “murder of Nokia 9” – it will cease to be relevant immediately after the announcement… Like last time, Juho believes the device is not “perfect”, even though the camera was great even on the first prototypes.

The tipster also noted that HMD Global’s employees are not very happy with the decision to move the release of the Nokia 9 to 2019, and that was one of the causes of the latest leaked photos of the Nokia 9.

The Nokia 9 is expected to sport an in-display fingerprint sensor, the first Nokia-branded phone to achieve that. Rumor has it that the device has a 6.01-inch display, and that it will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset. It is also rumored to come with up to 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage.
