The competition in the smartphone industry has become tougher over the years with sleeker devices and smarter technologies. These smartphone companies don’t seem to want to stop anytime soon. In fact, they’ve only been doing more and more. Everyone wants to be first; that is probably what prompted Rouyou to release the FlexPai – the first foldable smartphone in the world, ahead of Samsung, LG, and Huawei.
This week, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Tech Summit 2018 has been going on, and there have been a number of announcements, many of which are 5G-related. Qualcomm has also officially revealed the name and features of the upcoming Snapdragon 855 chipset.
At the Summit, Peter Lau, OnePlus CEO took the stage to talk about his company’s relationship with Qualcomm. He also seized the opportunity to announce that they will have the first flagship smartphone to feature the Snapdragon 855. This is indeed a big feat in the midst of the massive competition that abounds.
Lau gave a bit of history about how OnePlus started with the Snapdragon 801 SoC in the OnePlus One. He mentioned that the company has used Qualcomm 800-series chipsets in all their devices. And now, even though the name of OnePlus’s 2019 flagship is not known yet, what we do know is that it will be the first to feature Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 855 chipset.
Features of the Snapdragon 855 Chipset
Qualcomm has not revealed all the details about the Snapdragon 855 yet but we already know quite a lot about it. The chipset will be manufactured on a 7nm process, and it will be ready for 5G devices with the Snapdragon X50 modem. The chip includes the 4th-generation multi-core AI Engine which boasts 3 times the AI performance of its predecessor, the Snapdragon 845. The chip features the first Computer Vision Image Signal Processor (CV-ISP) to deliver new photo and video capture features.
Qualcomm also announced the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor. This sensor uses ultrasonic waves for in-display fingerprint scanners as against optical under-display fingerprint scanners which use light.
There have been rumors that OnePlus will be launching a 5G phone in 2019, so this news kind of goes in line with that. However, we do not know what exactly that new device will be called. There was one report which claimed that it will not be the OnePlus 7. Whichever way it goes, we are waiting for the launch of the first device to feature the Snapdragon 855 chipset. Let’s just hope it’s worth the wait.
